Frank Weld (Langella), an aging dad and retired jewel thief, lives a solitary life until his son (Marsden) installs a caretaker robot to look after him. Unnerved by its alien presence, Frank is not pleased with his new helper. But the robot quickly proves itself to be more than a machine or appliance - it becomes a friend.

The robot's stringent requirements to increase the healthiness of Frank's diet and exercise gradually succeed at improving the old man's overall well-being, and suddenly Frank has found a new lease on life. With the help of his unsuspecting friend, Frank attempts to woo a local librarian (Sarandon) and resume the criminal escapades of his past... and a new heist duo is born.
